Hello Everyone
There’s this thing I have with sunshine when I’m wandering around downtown: rather than sunrays filtering through the leaves and branches under trees, for a whole block or so there’s no sunshine until I suddenly step into a burst of brilliant warmth as I tromp along the sidewalk. In fact, I’ve seen pedestrians cross busy downtown streets, leaving the deep shadow of an architect’s dream, simply to walk with the sun. I like this: actually, I like it a lot and better yet if I’m set-up to paint.
“Downtown Corner”
There are intense light-sourced definitions downtown I don’t find in “natural” settings: black and white exists here as much as a sense of hope in sunlight that cleanses the city surfaces. Painting this, I define horizons with huge walls at one-block intervals as contrasts with strong edge lines tempt me into traffic turmoil. Sunlight pushes through all this: I’m awed by the strength of it. People move with the mood of the scene and I wonder how the trees feel about it all. This is all so human: buildings and streets constructed by people and vehicles driven by people pass by people on the sidewalks. People even told the trees where they are to grow: in this place people have shaped the sunshine.
“Natural” Settings
I’ve painted often in places where nature dwells and I will continue to do so. But I’m curious about what a “natural” setting is. Can it be concrete and glass as well as a river shore? Perhaps the answer depends on how it was created. Maybe the influence of time is a consideration. I’m not sure. When there’s something I want to paint I’m always drawn to how natural the place feels to me.Much joy and blessings to everyone
Jim
